While you’re counting down the days to a relaxing time off from school, the boys of Big Time Rush are gearing up for the biggest summer yet—which they’ll be spending wrapping up their fourth season, finishing their new album, and hitting the road with Victoria Justice. They’re calling it the Summer Break Tour, but it sure won’t be much of a break for the band—not that they seem to mind!
We caught up with Kendall, James, Carlos, and Logan to find out what to expect from their new album (pop!) and what’s keeping them busy these days (everything!).
What can you tell us about your tour?
James Maslow: We just announced we go on tour June 21st starting in California, here in our hometown, and we’re traveling to 38 cities across the U.S. We’ll see how it goes from there!

What are you most excited about?
Carlos Pena: We have Victoria Justice joining us and we’re super, super excited. She is super talented and I think she’s gonna bring a new element to our show from what we had last year. I’m looking forward to doing a lot more acoustic songs and more intimate setting stuff.

You have season four coming up. When do you start filming?
Logan Henderson: We’re actually almost done! We have one more major episode left and that will pretty much wrap up the season. We had a lot of fun doing it, a lot of new guest stars, and it’s been pretty interesting. It’s definitely, probably, our best season yet. And that season premieres May 2.

Of all the guest stars on the show, who’s been a personal favorite?
Kendall Schmidt: It was really cool having Snoop Dogg on set and I don’t think we ever anticipated that on this television show we would have Snoop Dogg be on it, let alone do a song with him. Also having Jon Stewart on the show was pretty cool. That’s coming up this season. We’re all big fans of him and he did little snippets for us. Our old friend JoJo Wright at Kiss FM is always welcome to come back, he’s fun to have around.
JM: Cher Lloyd was pretty cool, too. It was her first time doing an acting gig, and she did great and had a lot of fun.

What song are you dying to cover right now?
JM: “Trouble” was fun to cover. We’re actually brainstorming a potential cover with Victoria. We don’t have plans for it yet, but we’re definitely thinking about it. We may go with an oldie; we might go with a new song. We just don’t know yet.

Have you recorded with Victoria?
JM: We haven’t done a song with her, but we did a live acoustic collaboration with her that blew up. Our album’s wrapping up, so it’s probably too late to work with her on that, but there’s always room for a single or a viral video.

How would you describe the sound of your new album?
JM: We’re not trying to drastically change our sound by any means. What we did differently this time is we focused on the radio instead of the show. It’s really fast and poppy, with the essence of what our style has always been. We wrote great pop music—whatever felt good to us and sounded great. It’s still music that works well with the storyline of season four, and it’s also music that just came from our hearts and souls.
LH: You’re going to see a lot of these songs coming from more of a real place. You’ll definitely see a growth and a level of maturity from us that you’d haven’t really gotten to see as much in the past.

Who do you look to in the music realm for inspiration?
LH: We’re going to Coachella next weekend, and there are a lot of bands we’re really excited to see. But we’re also looking to oldies and old rock and roll. We could go on and on—we listen to pretty much everything we come upon.

Who are you listening on repeat right now?
LH: It’s always something different, but definitely Justin Timberlake. Every song is like five to eight minutes long so I listen to them over and over. I just heard Selena’s new song, “Come and Get It,” and I’m digging it. Also, Justin Bieber’s “All Around the World”—it’s got a crazy beat.
What else are you guys doing this summer other than touring?
LH: We have the album, the tour, and the show. What else do you want from us?! [laughs]

Your tour is called the Summer Break Tour, but will you be able to take your own summer vacation, too?
JM: We have a lot of fun on tour, so that’s kind of like vacation for us. Whenever we’re at a beach city, we’re out, or a big city, we’re out, so that’ll be fun.
